The Competition Policy Team of the World Bank Group and co-chairs of the International Competition Network (ICN) Advocacy Working Group has recognised the role that Malawi's Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has played in promoting procompetitive reforms that foster growth and reduce inequality.

In a statement, announcing the award winners of the 2014 Competition Advocacy Contest, whose aim was to showcase the role of agencies in promoting competition, the World Bank said the CFTC worked in collaboration with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to deal with the monopolistic conditions in the sugar industry, which is a key sector for growth in the country.

The World Bank has noted that the story that the CFTC submitted shows targeted advocacy activities that resulted in measurable impacts not only on markets, but on consumers and other stakeholders who participate in those markets.

In the statement, the Bank added that the initiative achieved significant results including increased availability of sugar across the country and new entrants in the distribution chain.

Commenting on the development, CFTC executive director Charlotte Wezi Malonda said she is excited that the Commission’s efforts have been recognised internationally.

"The prestigious World Bank Group competition advocacy award is a highly sought after recognition by competition authorities all over the world. This is a great honour for the CFTC and Malawi as a country and will no doubt, encourage us to become more proactive in the enforcement and advocacy for competition and consumer protection.

“It is also a clear demonstration of the up and coming international best practice of the convergence between competition and consumer protection. Competition is a key instrument for achieving socio-economic goals that reduce poverty and inequality," said Malonda.

Out of 25 competition agencies which submitted entries, top three applicants which include the CFTC have been invited to present their stories at an ICN-World Bank Group event in Sydney, Australia, on 1st May 2015. The entries will also be featured in a joint publication. However, the official award ceremony will be held in Washington DC, USA on 23 June 2015 where the agencies will be honoured.

This is the second recognition that the CFTC has earned in the last six months. In December 2014, the Anti-Corruption Bureau named the Competition and Fair Trading Commission as one of the top three Malawian organisations that have taken the initiative of fighting corruption at the workplace.
