Today, the President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Arthur Peter Mutharika presented a "Best Service Provider" award to the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC).

This follows an assessment made by the organisers of the 2015 Malawi International Trade Fair which singled out the CFTC for its exceptional service delivery to the general public and the business community.

Making the announcement, Minister of Industry and Trade, Hon Joseph Mwanamvekha said he was proud of the exceptional skills of the CFTC as one of the parastatals under his Ministry. The goal of the CFTC is to create a highly competitive and fair trading environment in Malawi for consumer welfare and business prosperity.

Other commentators said the CFTC has been proactive and resolute in its pursuit of protecting the market from detrimental effects caused by anti-competitive, deceptive and unfair trading practices. As a result, there has been a substantial improvement in market competitiveness and state of consumer.

Commenting on the development, CFTC Executive Director Charlotte Wezi Malonda said she was overwhelmed with joy to know that the Commission’s efforts are being recognised locally and internationally.

"We are a Commission for the people. We are proud to serve Malawians to bring positive change on how trading is conducted, and will continue advocating for improved consumer protection in a competitive environment", Malonda said.

This is the third best service award that the CFTC has earned in the 2014/15 financial year.

In December 2014, the Anti-Corruption Bureau named the CFTC as one of the top three Malawian organizations that have taken the initiative of fighting corruption at the workplace.

In April 2015, the CFTC was recognized by the World Bank and International Consumer Network (ICN) for its advocacy work in dealing with the monopolistic conditions in the sugar industry in Malawi. This initiative achieved significant results including increased availability of sugar across the country and new entrants in the distribution chain.
