In an effort to build a strong team working spirit, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) from 18th to 21st September organised a team building and business review workshop at Sunbird Livingstonia in Salima.

According to CFTC Corporate Services Manager, Catherine Nsoloma, the aim of the workshop was to motivate staff to achieve the Commission’s goals by working together as a team; and to discuss the Commission's successes and challenges and finding solutions for the same.

“The workshop was also aimed at promoting a culture of togetherness, openness and fairness, and to remind one another of our responsibilities without compromising the working ethics and integrity. It was aimed at fostering better and open communication amongst the staff,” said Nsoloma.

She added that during the workshop, staff members reflected on some of CFTC’s policies including funeral policy and HIV/Aids policy.

During the business review—an analysis of CFTC’s successes and challenges—it was noted that the Commission has performed well in providing short term trainings to build the capacity of staff to cope with the challenges of competition and consumer protection enforcement.

It was also observed that the working environment at the Commission was free, comfortable and stress-free. This, it was noted made it possible for staff at different levels to work together as members of one family.

It was, however, noted that the Commission needs to work on resource mobilisation and consider establishing regional offices in the Southern, Central and Northern parts of Malawi.

The workshop also covered training on anti corruption organised by the CFTC’s Institutional Integrity Committee (IIC). The IIC works hand in hand with Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) to develop programmes that sensitise staff on corruption, its causes and consequences on the economy.

In December 2014, the ACB named the Commission as one of the top three Malawian organisations that have taken the initiative of fighting corruption at the workplace.

Commenting on how CFTC benefitted from the workshop, Paul Munthali, who is the Commission’s Driver and Office Assistant, said it was a success because it increased cohesion among staff and promoted team spirit, preserving of culture and taking CFTC as a family where everyone belongs to.

Munthali also noted that the Anti-Corruption training increased awareness amongst staff on corruption issues and it was an eye opener in identification of corrupt activities.
