The Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has put in place a comprehensive advocacy and education programme targeting diverse audiences including academics and university students.

As part of the lecture series, on December 1 2015, the Commission held a Competition Law lecture at Lilongwe University of Natural Resources (LUANAR) at Bunda campus. This was the fourth in a series, following lectures delivered at Chancellor College, the Polytechnic and Blantyre International University last year.

During the lecture at LUANAR, CFTC Executive Director, Charlotte Wezi Malonda made a presentation on the background of competition policy and law in Malawi.

Malonda alsospoke about the different functions performed by the Commission, namely regulatory, investigative and adjudicative functions including penalties for violating the Competition and Fair Trading Act.On Mergers, Malonda said there is need to control mergers to prevent concentration of market power and ensure that there is competition.

“If we do not control mergers we might end up waking up one day and find that all the companies belong to one person or entity which will be detrimental to consumers,” said Malonda.

She added that academic institutions provide think tanks, which assist in building robust enforcement systems and each one of us must take an interest in understanding the role of competition and consumer protection enforcement in poverty alleviation and development of our nation.
