CFTC CONDUCTS LECTURE AT CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY

Participants to the Competition Law Lecture

To ensure that students are well versed with competition and consumer protection issues, on 23rd March, 2017 the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) conducted a competition law lecture at the Catholic University. This was the 10th lecture in a series of lectures to public and private universities.

Speaking during the lecture which was attended by over 200 students, CFTC Executive Director, Charlotte Wezi Malonda thanked the University for giving the Commission an opportunity to talk to the students about competition and consumer protection issues.

“We are thankful to Catholic University for allowing us to come and share with the students about CFTC, there are a few that teach about Competition Law, this is a concern to us because Competition and Consumer Law is vital.”

CU 2Malonda made a presentation on the background of competition law policy in Malawi, the legislative framework of CFTC,appointment of commissioners and composition, establishment of secretariat, regulatory role of the Commission, investigative function, adjudicative role of commissioners, core functions of the Commission and penalties.

The university’s Dean of Law, Wezi Sataya commended the Commission for taking an initiative to conduct a Competition Law lecture at Catholic University.

Speaking after the Lecture, Professor Chipeta appreciated the lecture conducted by CFTC. He indicated that we are all consumers and that the lecture is relevant and timely.

The CFTC has put in place an aggressive advocacy and education program targeting diverse audiences including academics, business community and consumers in general. To instill interest in Competition and Consumer law the Commission launched lecture series in Universities in Malawi and for the secondary school level the Commission launched Competition and Fair Trading clubs.
