Marketing of Kariba Bream as Chambo

It has come to the attention of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) that there are some enterprises that are engaged in the promotion, marketing and selling of Karibu Bream fish as Mega Chambo / tilapia Chambo or Chambo from the Zambezi. This information has been published through different media including newspaper advertisements.
 
In pursuit of its mandate of regulating, monitoring, controlling and preventing acts or behaviours which are likely to adversely affect competition and consumer welfare in Malawi, the Commission has reviewed the adverts in newspapers, on the fridges at the point of sale, and at the wholesale and retail packaging of the product. The Commission has further reviewed the actual fish, and engaged Fisheries experts for physical examination of the product.

Public Hearing Rescheduled to 22nd October 2014

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission wishes to inform the general public that the Public Hearing that was scheduled to take place on 17th October 2014 has now been shifted to Wednesday 22 October 2014. The Venue remains the same – Mpikisano House in Lilongwe.

Invitation to a Public Hearing on alleged price fixing

Pursuant to Section 10(2) and Section 11 of the Competition and Fair Trading Act, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission will hold a Public Hearing on Friday 17th October 2014 at Mpikisano House in Lilongwe from 0900 hrs.

The objective of the Public Hearing is to provide an opportunity to the Insurance Association of Malawi (IAM) and other interested parties to make oral submissions to members of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission on allegations of price fixing levelled against the Insurance Association of Malawi.

Press Statement - World Consumer Rights Day 2014

INTRODUCTION
15 March is World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD), an annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the international consumer movement. The theme for this year is “Fix our phone rights”.  Historically, WCRD is set on this day to coincide with the date in 1962 when former US President John F Kennedy first outlined the definition of Consumer Rights. We in Malawi , Join the international community in commemoration of this day.

Invitation to a public dialogue on phone rights

Every year, the world commemorates World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on 15 March. This year, Malawi will join the rest of the world in commemorating the Day under the theme “Fix Our Phone Rights”.

To mark the Day, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) have organised a Public Dialogue that will be held at the Crossroads Hotel Auditorium on Friday 14 March 2014 from 1830 hrs. The event, which will be broadcast live on Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS), will provide a rare opportunity to consumers to engage major fixed / mobile telephone companies directly and highlight issues that restrict full enjoyment of their phone rights.

Review of the Competition and Fair Trading Act Regulations

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission is currently in the process of reviewing the Competition and Fair Trading Regulations to enable better enforcement of the law in Malawi. The Commission is therefore inviting views and comments from the general public on the proposed draft regulations (Click here to download).
