The Competition and Fair Trading Commission has received an application for authorisation of the acquisition of ISP operations of Burco Electronic Systems (Burco) Limited by Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) Limited, herein referred to as the Parties.
Pursuant to Section 10(2) and Section 11 of the Competition and Fair Trading Act, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission will hold a Public Hearing on Friday 17th October 2014 at Mpikisano House in Lilongwe from 0900 hrs.
The objective of the Public Hearing is to provide an opportunity to the Insurance Association of Malawi (IAM) and other interested parties to make oral submissions to members of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission on allegations of price fixing levelled against the Insurance Association of Malawi.
In line with Section 11 of the Competition and Fair Trading Act, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission will hold a public hearing on Friday 16th May, 2014 at Mount Soche Hotel in Blantyre.
INTRODUCTION
15 March is World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD), an annual occasion for celebration and solidarity within the international consumer movement. The theme for this year is “Fix our phone rights”. Historically, WCRD is set on this day to coincide with the date in 1962 when former US President John F Kennedy first outlined the definition of Consumer Rights. We in Malawi , Join the international community in commemoration of this day.
Every year, the world commemorates World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) on 15 March. This year, Malawi will join the rest of the world in commemorating the Day under the theme “Fix Our Phone Rights”.
To mark the Day, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) and the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) have organised a Public Dialogue that will be held at the Crossroads Hotel Auditorium on Friday 14 March 2014 from 1830 hrs. The event, which will be broadcast live on Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS), will provide a rare opportunity to consumers to engage major fixed / mobile telephone companies directly and highlight issues that restrict full enjoyment of their phone rights.
The Competition and Fair Trading Commission is currently in the process of reviewing the Competition and Fair Trading Regulations to enable better enforcement of the law in Malawi.
