A well informed society is key to achieving a culture of fair competition and consumer protection in the economy, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) has said.
CFTC Executive Director Charlotte Wezi Malonda said this when she delivered an inaugural lecture on antitrust law (otherwise known as competition law) to law students at Malawi’s biggest University campus – Chancellor College in Zomba.
The lecture series is part of CFTC’s wider advocacy and education programme which seeks to create mass awareness about the Competition and Fair Trading Act, promote voluntary compliance with the Act among the business community and empower consumers to report unfair trading practices.
The Competition and Fair Trading Commission has ordered Independent Schools Association of Malawi to cease and desist from engaging in anti-competitive business practices. This follows investigations the Commission conducted which established that the association was engaged in prohibited fixing of school fees.
Charlotte Wezi Malonda, Executive Director of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission said price fixing was a violation of Section 34 of the Competition and Fair Trading Act.
The Competition and Fair Trading Commission has ordered Blantyre Water Board to cease and desist from engaging in prohibited unfair trading practices. This follows investigations the Commission conducted which established that the company engaged in unconscionable conduct by implementing a deliberate policy of delayed reconnection of water supply.
Under the policy, water consumers whose supply was disconnected due to non-payment of outstanding bills are only reconnected after three days upon payment of outstanding balance and a penalty.
Charlotte Wezi Malonda, Executive Director of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission said Blantyre Water Board is prohibited by law from unreasonably delaying reconnection of water supply.
