CFTC to deliver Competition Law lectures at Chancellor College

The advocacy and education campaign by the Competition and Fair Trading Commission is gain- ing real momentum. Following successful advocacy workshops held with the judiciary, private sector, sector regulators and the media, the Commission is taking the campaign to tertiary institutions of learning. The first destination is the Law faculty at Chancellor College, a constituent college of the University of Malawi.

Although the faculty runs undergraduate commercial law courses, the current curriculum does not sufficiently cover the competition regime in Malawi. Against that background, the Commission’s proposal to conduct a series of lectures on competition law and policy to law students at the University has been accepted by the authorities. The main goal of the lectures is to contribute to a more active and informed consumer and future legal advisor to the business. In accepting the proposal, Dean of Law at Chancellor College Dr Mwiza Nkhata said: “I am pleased to offer you confirmation of the Faculty of Law’s commitment to this lecture series. Considering that students are the primary target audience for the lecture series, I propose that we hold the lecture series in the course of the next academic year”.

It is expected that the lectures will provide a platform for academic discourse on prevailing competition and consumer protection issues.
