CFTC EMBARKS ON DOOR TO DOOR ADVOCACY CAMPAIGN

In keeping with its mandate of providing education to business and consumers, the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC) is conducting a door to door awareness and advocacy exercise for traders in the Northern region.

During the exercise, officials of the Commission will visit business premises and offer advice to traders on compliance with the Competition and Fair Trading Act.

Executive Director of the Competition and Fair Trading Commission, Charlotte Wezi Malonda says the door to door advocacy programme will provide an opportunity for traders to understand competition and consumer protection laws of Malawi and share the benefits of compliance with trade laws, with the consumer.

Malonda said:

“Consumer welfare is respected in a competitive environment, everyone whether consumer or trader is protected by the law, what we want is for the law to be respected. Safeguarding consumer welfare is a shared responsibility for all Malawians and we should not undermine particularly now where out of pocket funds are low. We will enforce against any detected misconduct or infringements to end any lawlessness on the markets”.

“This door to door advocacy campaign will contribute towards entrenching a culture of consumer protection among the business community as well as insulate consumers in the target areas from potential abusive trading practices”.

It is also expected that the campaign will assist traders to evaluate the effects of their conduct or behaviour on consumer interests and therefore take appropriate remedial measures for the benefit of the market.

Apart from Mzuzu City, the exercise will cover Mzimba, Karonga and Nkhatabay District.
