Signing Ceremony of MOU between MBS and CFTC

Signing ceremonyCFTC Executive Director Charlotte Wezi Malonda said in the mandates of the MBS and the Commission, there are several areas of concurrent jurisdiction on which the two institutions can work together in promoting consumer welfare in the country.
 
The Bureau engages in product testing and inspection to ensure that traders sell goods that meet product safety standards. On the other hand, the Commission is mandated to regulate the market to prevent anticompetitive business practices and promote consumer protection. Read more
 

Signing Ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding between CFTC and MERA

Commissioner Dr Gerard Chigona said CFTC and MERA share a common goal of enhancing the smooth operations of businesses through promotion of competition and levelling the playing field and at the same time safeguarding the welfare of consumers and citizens in general. Read more

Also speaking at the same event, CFTC Executive Director Charlotte Wezi Malonda said the birth of the CFTC has stimulated the business community by compelling them to adhere to ethical conduct and protect vulnerable enterprises. She said the courts too have been equally stimulated. Read more
 

Strategic Planning Workshop

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission held a stakeholder consultative workshop on the development of the 2014-2019 strategic plan. During the workshop, Chairperson Dr Gerard Chigona said the strategic plan will play a crucial role in guiding the enforcement of the Competition and Fair Trading Act in Malawi. Read More

Judges Colloquium

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission held a Judges Colloquium on 11th  April 2014 in Mangochi.  The event was officially opened by the Chief Justice, Dr Anastazia Msosa, SC. In her speech, Justice Msosa said competition law was adopted in Malawi to prevent powerful commercial enterprises or groups of enterprises from using their powers to compete in ways that distort competition and thereby harm other players in the economy. She said the role of the judiciary was to ensure that all parties are heard and that principles of fairness are upheld. Read more
 

Compliance Programme for Parastatals

The Competition and Fair Trading Commission held a compliance programme for state owned enterprises in Malawi. The event was officially opened by the Chairperson, Dr Gerard Chigona. In his speech, Dr Chigona said the compliance programme will help state owned enterprises to cultivate a culture of good corporate citizenship. Read more
